Chapter 9
âWonderful, isnât she?â
I pulled my eyes away from the golf simulator and looked across the room. Truman Wells was not a very attractive man. His features wereâ¦off. His nose was just a little too big for his face and his eyes too small. He was about my height and extremely thin; however, he was dressed in a custom made suit that fit him perfectly.
âMr. Wells,â I said walking toward him. âThank you for seeing me.â
âOf course. How could I refuse? Iâve never met a pet detective before,â he said, and then he giggled. I tried not to roll my eyes. Like I hadnât heard that a thousand times. I smiled slightly, but before I could reply he continued, âI saw your reaction to my simulator. Isnât she great?â
She?
âUhm. Yeah, great. Your ex-wife has one just like it. She saidâ¦â
âNO!â Truman practically shouted at me. âLorraine has a Gold 700 Golf Simulator. This is a Gold 800. Best on the market. It just came out last week. I got one of the first because of my connections. Lorraine could not afford this.â
The simulator looked the same to me. There was a label on the side, which had the name, but other than that, I couldnât see any differences between the one in Trumanâs office and the one I saw at Lorraineâs so I simply smiled. I was more interested in the fact Truman thought Lorraine couldnât afford the new simulator.
âDo you play?â Truman asked before I could question him. I had learned my lesson from speaking with Lorraine. Saying an unequivocal no would shut him down.
âNo, but I have been thinking about learning,â I replied. âI understand itâs a great sport.â
âOh it is,â Truman said. His eyes slid up and down my body before saying suggestively, âI could give you a private lesson.â
Inwardly I cringed, but it wasnât the first time I had been hit on during a case. I needed the information, and I could play the game. Truman didnât worry me. With my training, I could take him down before he had a chance to get too close. I would flirt a little, but he wouldnât get anywhere. His eyes were currently glued to my chest. Iâm not sure why. It isnât all that impressive.
âThat would be great, but Iâm not going to have any free time until I close this case. Would you mind very much if I asked you a few questions?â
âSure, sure,â he said, reluctantly returning his eyes to my face. He pointed to one of the chairs and then walked around his desk and sat down.
I sat across from him and pulled out my phone to take notes. When I looked up, he was watching me. The flirtation was gone. It gave me pause. What had made him change? Usually Iâm good at deciphering peopleâs motives, but I couldnât determine anything I had done or said that would raise a flag with Truman. Maybe he was simply a âno mixing business with pleasureâ sort of person.
